Evaluate team performance and determine training needs
Many organizations struggle with how to know if their teams are effective. Others who are just starting teams or work teams have had for some time wondering what kind of new training or follow-up that should provide the teams to ensure their effectiveness. Both needs can be met through the development of a method of evaluating teams.
Each team should participate separately in the evaluation process and it would be better if the participation of individual members is anonymous so that members do not feel pressured to classify everything as going well. Anonymity will aid in the process of honesty. A process without honesty will give valuable information, or help bring about the desired results.
The easiest and fastest way to individual assessments is a form based on a survey. A standard form will provide a way to constantly monitor the team needs on a quarterly basis. A good assessment will also make it easier to compare the teams as all teams will be measured in the same way for training purposes. A good evaluation form questions about team roles within the team, meetings and group performance with a numbered list to determine training needs. An example would be a ranking for the team always does, because it is often 2 to 3 times, 4 for it from time to time, and 5 for never does this. For the growth of individual teams, the evaluation may also include space for applications specific to the type of team, such as issues of completion of the project team or work attitudes and behaviors.
Ask questions about the team and assigning ranks to help determine if additional training is necessary. If the sample files above are used, and where the team ranks a question to a very large number, this could indicate an immediate need for training in this area. If the rankings are very low numbers, then additional training may not be necessary or may wait until the team decides it is necessary. For an average level, the team needs some training, but the need is so immediate unless the ranking changes.
What kind of training is necessary on the basis of lists of evaluation? If the ranks were associated with the roles, the training offer may include soft skills like leadership, methods to encourage participation, conflict resolution, time management, team roles and stages, communication, giving and receiving feedback on performance., interpersonal skills, personality differences, diversity and empowerment with education authorities and responsibilities. Technical skills that may be required for members who are also taking certain specific roles minutes or writing reports, applications, organization, quality and statistics. For meetings, the highest rank should indicate the team needs training in organizing effective meetings, decision-making processes, or techniques for generating ideas and problem solving.
Questions about the group's performance may indicate the need for a facilitated process to assist in the development of group goals or mission statement and goal setting. Or training in time management, planning / management and, where appropriate, detailed instructions on procedures, process flow analysis, or policy may be required. If you have specific questions were added team categories, the numbers they bring to these questions will determine the necessary specialist training. For example, a team of Information Technology project may need project management training or some members may need training in a computer language or a specific application. Whereas a group of agents of change or a team problem-solving skills may need to change management, customer service, domain analysis, and problem solving techniques.
After the training was taken by team members and after a few months have passed. Reassess the team to determine if the training is actually used or if an update is needed. Maintain team performance evaluated and trained members are key to the success and effectiveness of teams within an organization.
