Calcium response to Building a successful team
A common theme floats through the steps of any youth sports event. This theme represents the essential elements of teamwork that are crucial for every company in America. Each manager has the task of assembling groups of people and bringing in a direction of success. Obviously, this sounds much easier than it is, but why?
Ask parents of young athletes what they think of coaching and leadership of their sons or daughters team. Most will offer a positive note about the team and the coach. The unspoken is often the focus of the issue and is concerned the only participant who really matters, their child. Parents reserve the right to have high opinions of their children's athletic prowess and ability to impact on the team. They feel that the coaches are trying, but rarely see the true sporting spirit of their child. Those of you who have spent hours and hours on the cold aluminum bleachers can refer to this message.
The problem lies mainly in the message that children receive at home. They listen and give their team and coach their maximum effort in practice, only to hear a parent tell them how undervalued and misused are actually on the pitch. Many of these athletes before returning to practice asking themselves why they are not the focus of attention or the top scorer. The results can be devastating for the young. Unsure of their real value and role of the team may lose interest, pull down the other, or exit. Because the window of athletic participation is of short duration for all children, we often miss the mark, as parents and coaches. Young coaches have the unique opportunity to develop not only the team but the life of every young person. The beauty of sport in our world today is that the field of play can be a powerful teacher of life lessons to come.
In the business world, just as in youth sport, football is the true model. Imagine being a football coach for a second. The goal is to establish a set of objectives, vision, providing roles for participants, and plan a path to success. Not until each of the players to buy into the game plan moves forward in the right direction. So where does calcium enter the analogy?
As a coach you have to decide who will fill all the positions on the field. Just like to field a team of business and office staff, the coach must find and develop the best center, quarterback, receiver and place kicker. What qualifications are needed at each location? How do you entice players to accept less glamorous roles of the team? You have quality people in your organization can fill these positions or run properly and you need to recruit? What strategy is used when a player does not accept the role you have? Want to know how to put the best team in the field if you were the coach? The role of a corporate leader is very similar.
To crystallize this process, a great coach or a leader who instill the value and size of each team member in their specific role. In truth, almost every child grows up with the desire to be the quarterback or receiver. What would such a team with 11 quarterbacks and no one to hook the ball or block them? While the form players and roles in the team who buy on the importance of what each bring to the table. They gain strength and confidence in doing their job well. Without their role to be filled in an important way, the team does not perform to his ability. When more than one player fails to accept or perform their role, the team begins to deteriorate from the inside. Outside, the losses rather than filling the program wins. My advice to all business leaders is to take a look at the genius of the great coaches of sports. You can find them at the elementary, high school, college, and pro levels. How and why did you make these difficult decisions for staff on a daily basis, year after year. You will find that all teachers have to define roles and establish the importance of each role. Like every part of the team is assembled and developed through practice and hard work, the inner workings of a successful team are in place. Take a page from the playbook of football and build your winning team ....
